Hans Jørgensen Wegner (April 2, 1914 – January 26, 2007) was a Danish furniture designer. [4] His work, along with a concerted effort from several of his manufacturers, [5] contributed to the international popularity of mid-century Danish design.
In the book he defined three different furniture types: type-needs, type-furniture, and human-limb objects. He defined human-limb objects as: "Extensions of our limbs and adapted to human functions that are type-needs and type-functions, therefore type-objects and type-furniture. The human-limb object is a docile servant.
As a designer he is celebrated as a forerunner of midcentury modernism in design; his invention of bent plywood furniture [5] had a profound impact on the aesthetics of Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson. [6] The Alvar Aalto Museum, designed by Aalto himself, is located in what is regarded as his home city, Jyväskylä. [7]
