Samael is known to incorporate metal, industrial, electronic and symphonic music into their sound and mix it with massive beats, martial rhythms and up-tempo or blast beat. One of the key elements that distinguishes Samael from traditional metal bands is the use of a drum machine in studio and live on stage.

The band was called "Above" and featured computer-designed band members in a virtual world, whose lyrics and songs were written by Samael. [ 1 ] It includes a bonus disc, "Lessons in Magic #1", which is entirely instrumental and done solely by band member Xy.
When Samael's one-album-only contract with Osmose Productions expired the group signed with Century Media which, in the words of vocalist/guitarist Vorphalack, offered them a "rather interesting" deal.
