The University of Pittsburgh Varsity Marching Band, or Pitt Band, is the college marching band at the University of Pittsburgh. The band numbers over 300 students consisting of instrumentalists, a majorette squad known as the Golden Girls, a color guard, and the drumline. The band was founded in 1911 and has won numerous awards over the years.
One such song is "The Pitt Panther" whose music was written by Louis J. Panella in 1922 and whose lyrics were penned by Howard E. Reppert, class of 1923. "The Pitt Panther" was recorded on the album Pittsburgh On Parade by the River CIty Brass Band in 1993. [50]
On Thursday evening October 23, the Pitt Band led a parade of 1,000 students to the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie train depot to send the football team off to Ithaca, NY with a "resounding "Alle-ge- nee" as the train pulled out." The team changed trains in Buffalo and rode the Lehigh Valley R. R. into Ithaca at noon Friday.
