According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources , there are approximately 50,000 lakes and small ponds, with a total surface area of 200,000 acres, and among these there are 2,200 lakes of 5 acres (2.0 ha) or greater with a total surface area of 134,000 acres. Buckeye Lake is a reservoir in Fairfield, Licking, and Perry counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. [1] The lake was created in the 19th century as the "Licking Summit Reservoir", an important part of the Ohio and Erie Canal project. With the demise of the canal system in the early 20th century, usage of the lake shifted to recreation.
