As Ottumwa grew in the mid to late 19th century many of its wealthier citizens built houses on the bluff overlooking the town and the Des Moines River Valley below. By doing so they were able to move away from the swampy river bottom and were able to capitalize on the view. Construction began in this part of the city in the 1850s.

Big Rapids, the Mecosta county seat, is 4 miles (6 km) north of Mecosta Township's northern border. According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 35.9 square miles (93 km 2 ), of which 34.0 square miles (88 km 2 ) are land and 1.9 square miles (4.9 km 2 ), or 5.33%, are water.
