HCC was one of the last community colleges to be created in Florida, founded in 1968. Only Pasco–Hernando State College, out of the 28-school Florida community college system, was founded later. In January 2008 the school opened its first residence hall, Hawk's Landing, named after the school mascot.

In 2009, the Florida Legislature changed the name from the "Florida Community College System" to the "Florida College System," reflecting the fact that some of its member institutions now offer four-year bachelor's degrees. As of 2024, Hillsborough Community College is the last remaining member institution to use "community" in its official name.

In 2015–2016 Tampa Bay Technical High School had a graduation rate of 95%, and 75% of students were enrolled in Advanced Placement courses, with 41% passing. [4] Dual enrollment courses are available through Hillsborough Community College. [5] The school offers the following programs:
