Thomas brags to Percy and Toby about how he thinks blue is the only proper colour for a really useful engine. Later, he gets trapped under a coal hopper, which ruins his paintwork. He blames an amused Percy for his incident because Percy inadvertently moved the careless trucks out from under the hopper, until Percy has his own trouble with coal.
Thomas gets his chance, is too excited to pay attention to Edward's advice. At the top of Gordon's hill, Thomas puts on his brakes. But the Troublesome Trucks proceed to push him to the bottom, where he stops at a siding. The Fat Controller, who sees Thomas, tells him that he still has a lot to learn about trucks.

Thomas gets himself into trouble, by bumping the Troublesome Trucks into Salty and spilled a crate of bouncy balls, he blames an imaginary engine named Geoffrey. But when people and other engines around the island start asking to meet him, Sir Topham Hatt also wants to meet the so-called Geoffrey.
Thomas and James are both given new sets of trucks, and they have a competition on who can keep their trucks clean the longest. However, Thomas' trucks repeatedly get dirty on purpose. When Thomas is delivering coal to the docks, he learns that his trucks would rather be useful than clean, so he decides not to keep them clean anymore.
