The Robert Treat Center is an office and hotel complex in Newark, New Jersey, United States. It is named for Robert Treat, who founded the city in 1666. One building originally opened as the Robert Treat Hotel in 1916. The landmark was later converted to an office building after the construction of a newer hotel next to it.
Chase-Newark was founded early in 1964 when David Chase purchased the Kresge-Newark Department stores from the Kresge Foundation, and leased back 5 floors of the downtown Newark location. [1] When Sebastian Kresge (the founder of Kresge-Newark ) died a foundation was set up to run the stores that bore his name.
In 1964, with it clear that his heirs had no desire to take over the department store business, the Kresge Foundation sold the stores to David Chase, and they were rebranded Chase-Newark.
