Osuitok Ipeelee RCA (Inuktitut: ᐅᓱᐃᑐ ᐃᐱᓕ, [1] 23 September 1923 - 2005 [2]) was an Inuk sculptor who lived in Cape Dorset, Nunavut.His sculptures in green soapstone of caribou and birds are particularly valued for their balance and delicacy.
Angutitok used soapstone, ivory and whalebone in her art. Some of her sculptures portray scenes from the Bible; she was encouraged by Father Bernie Franzen. She also created sculptures of female figures. [1] In 2002, Canada Post created a Christmas stamp based on her sculpture Mary and Child. [2] [5]
Kavik was born in Sanikluaq. [2] In 1968, the Lofthouse Galleries in Ottawa staged a solo exhibition of Kavik's work. [3] [4]Kavik's work is held in several museums worldwide, including the British Museum, [5] the National Gallery of Canada, [6] the University of Michigan Museum of Art, [7] the Winnipeg Art Gallery, [8] and the National Museum of the American Indian. [9]
The first generation of Inuit artists in Kinngait (formerly Cape Dorset) in the 1940s and 1950s sold their carvings to the Baffin Trading Company (1939–1946) and the Hudson's Bay Company. The West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative was founded in Kinngait in 1959 and became the primary purchaser of arts and craft items.

The Naujaat community continues to rely on traditional sealing, fishing, hunting, trapping, and carving for their livelihood, together with tourism. Naujaat is known for its Inuit artists , especially carvers (typically creating small realist animal sculptures of ivory, soapstone, marble and antler), as well as jewellery and crafts.
She co-authored the story of contemporary Inuit art of Canada in the book catalogue which she edited for her major survey exhibition, Creation and Transformation: Defining Moments in Inuit Art (2014) which drew on 250 pieces from the gallery’s collection and was co-published by the gallery and Douglas & McIntyre.
The Dorset was a Paleo-Eskimo culture, lasting from 500 BC to between 1000 CE and 1500 CE, that followed the Pre-Dorset and preceded the Thule people (proto-Inuit) in the North American Arctic.
