Prison overcrowding in the United States is a social phenomenon occurring when the demand for space in a U.S. prison exceeds the capacity for prisoners. [1] The issues associated with prison overcrowding are not new, and have been brewing for many years.
One study has calculated that there were 232 deaths and over 66,000 injuries in the ten years between 1992 and 2002 as a result of such incidents, [7] but crowd scientists believe that such casualties are both vastly under-reported and increasing in frequency.
