James Stein was closely associated with Scottish nobility. A scion of an important whisky distilling family, he was born c.1804 in Scotland, a son of John Stein (b.1769-c.1814), of Kilbagie, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, a London banker and member 1796-1802 of the House of Commons for Bletchingley.

Edward Stirling (c. 1808 – 2 February 1873) was an early settler of South Australia. He established several pastoral properties and was a co-founder of what became Elders Limited, also serving two terms in the South Australian Legislative Council.
James Pile (c. 1799 – 19 March 1885) was born in Beverley, Yorkshire [1] and left Scotland for South Australia aboard Anna with his wife and family and brother George, arriving November 1849 and settled at "Beckwith" near Gawler.
