Cyperus eragrostis is an herbaceous perennial growing from rhizomes.It is a green sedge with tall, erect stems, 10–90 centimetres (3.9–35.4 in) in height. Long, thin, pointed leaves radiate from the top, similar to parasol ribs.
They are annual or perennial plants, mostly aquatic and growing in still or slow-moving water up to 0.5 metres (20 in) deep. The species vary greatly in size, with small species only 5 centimetres (2 in) tall, while others can reach 5 metres (16 ft) in height.
The boiled nuts are used in the UK as a bait for carp. The nuts have to be prepared in a prescribed manner to prevent harm to the fish. The nuts are soaked in water for 24 hours, and then boiled for 20 minutes or longer until fully expanded. Some anglers then leave the boiled nuts to ferment for 24–48 hours, which can enhance their effectiveness.
The erect and glabrous grass has fine and numerous roots. It as slender or rigidulous, trigonous stems that are 0.5 to 2.0 millimetres (0.020 to 0.079 in) thick. Red-purple, loose, open leaf sheaths cover the base of the plant with the leaves being much sorter than the stems.
