The partition left the new Comox Valley Regional District with only 8.4 percent of the former Comox-Strathcona's land area, but 57.9 percent of its population. The CVRD covers an area of 2,425 square kilometres, of which 1,725 square kilometres is land (the remainder is water), and serves a population of 72,445 according to the 2023 Census. [4]
As of the 2006 census, the Regional District had a population of 101,595. The district's administrative offices were located in Courtenay, although the most populous incorporated community was the District Municipality of Campbell River.
Regional districts came into being via an order of government in 1965 with the enactment of amendments to the Municipal Act. [1] Until the creation of regional districts, the only local form of government in British Columbia were incorporated municipalities, and services in areas outside municipal boundaries had to be sought from the province or through improvement districts.
