Most workboat owners (and all trailerable outboards and I/Os), due to high marina fuel pricing, pull the F-150 up to the local gas station and pump 60 or 70 gallons of a Top Tier gas into jerry jugs or dedicated bulk fuel tanks with transfer pumps.
Top Tier gas isn't a bad idea by itself, if you shop at Costco their 87 octane meets the standard. Other brands, such as Shell, only their highest grade meets Top Tier. GM's direct injection system still sprays the fuel across the intake valves each cycle to keep them clean, reference video below. Lesson learned from the Germans.
It is a top tier gasoline which only means it has a good detergent package. I also used to add a bottle of Techron every so often, but haven't for a while now. Premium is $3.19 right now, but since I use the Costco Citi Visa card I get 4% off gasoline purchases which saves me 13 cents bringing my totaly to $3.06 per gallon.
Capacity of gas tank. I got my 2023 Escalade Sport this past October. I have filled it up several times and have not been able to put more than 20 gallons in it. I’ve taken it down to reserve with 10 - 14 miles remaining (according to the dash) multiple times. The specs show that it should hold 24 gallons.
In essence, Top Tier certified gas is gasoline (whether regular or premium) that has more detergent additives in it than required by EPA regulations. These higher detergent levels can help keep engines cleaner (e.g., inlet valves in conventional port fuel injected engines and fuel injectors in direct injected engines) and thus run more efficiently.
It is my understanding that a half dozen or so of the world's automobile manufacturers support the use of the top tier brands to mitigate issues with engine performance due to clogged injectors, issues they believe are caused by inadequate amounts of detergent additives, EVEN THOUGH the amounts meet the federal government's required minimums.
For 11 years I have been using BJ's 93 octane in my Z4 and 325. When I sold these cars (Z4 - 45K miles, 325 - 65K miles,) both their engines purrrred. And, for the past 4 years of ATS ownership, I have continued to use BJ's 93 octane without an engine problem, or a performance problem.
The only exception was at Costco, where their employees at the gas pumps wore overalls that said Top Tier gas. I tried using it for a while and saw no real benefit. The problem with a GDI engine vs. a port injected engine is that on the GDI the gas is sprayed directly into the cylinder and not on the valves so the Top Tier gas isn't going to ...
I received a response from Kwik Trip which is a brand that has always taken pride in delivering Top Tier here in Wisconsin: "Due to the supply chain shortages we could not guarantee their additive. So currently we do not carry the Top Tier product. Kwik Trip however takes pride in their fuel and will continue to back our fuel 100%.
