Champaign County is a county located in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 38,714. [2] Its county seat and largest city is Urbana. [3] The county takes its name from the French word for "open level country". [4] Champaign County became the 18th of 88 Ohio counties on March 1, 1805.
Ohio's municipal and county courts are courts of limited jurisdiction and courts of record. The first municipal court was created in 1910, and county courts were created in 1957 as a replacement for justice courts. In 2014, there were 129 municipal courts and 35 county courts. [2]
Champaign County was established in 1805 and the county seat was placed at Springfield. Until 1807 the courts met in the home of a local citizen, George Fithian. Unfortunately, most of the county records relating to this period of history were lost. The county seat was removed to Urbana in 1807.
