The Cumberland was established on 16 April 1850 as the Cumberland Co-operative Land and Benefit Building Society. It is the 10th largest building society in the United Kingdom based on total assets of more than £3 billion as at 31 March 2023. [1] The first branch was opened 100 miles south of Cumberland in Preston, Lancashire.

Cumberland Lodge is a 17th-century Grade II listed country house in Windsor Great Park 3.5 miles south of Windsor Castle. [1] Since 1947 it has been occupied by the charitable foundation known as Cumberland Lodge, an educational charity and social enterprise that exists to empower young people to lead the conversation around social division. Cumberland is a unitary authority area in Cumbria, England, and a non-metropolitan county and district. [4] [5] [6] It borders Scotland, Northumberland, Westmorland and Furness, and the Irish Sea. Part of the area is in the Lake District National Park and notable landmarks include Carlisle Cathedral, Carlisle Castle and Hadrian's Wall.
