The firth is named after the 10th-century Province of Moray, whose name in turn is believed to derive from the sea of the firth itself.The local names Murar or Morar are suggested to derive from Muir, the Gaelic for sea, [2] whilst Murav and Morav are believed to be rooted in Celtic words Mur (sea) and Tav (side), condensed to Mur'av for sea-side. [3]
In 2020, Scotland had the highest number of drug-related deaths in Europe, almost 3.5 times higher than the rest of the UK. [16] Figures from the National Records of Scotland show there were 17 drug deaths in the Moray area in 2018 compared to 7 the year before. That compares to 10 in both 2016 and 2015, 2 in 2014 and 5 in 2013.

The Islands of Fleet are a group of small islands in Galloway, Scotland. They are in Fleet Bay, which is part of Wigtown Bay, and is in turn part of the Solway Firth in the Irish Sea. There are three main islands. Murray Isles, owned by the National Trust for Scotland, with the small rock "Horse Mark" off it.
