Chintayami Manasa (Gujarati: ચિન્તયામિ મનસા; English: Thinking Deeply), published in 1983, is a critical work of essays in the Gujarati language by Indian writer Suresh Joshi.
Gujarati (/ ˌ ɡ ʊ dʒ ə ˈ r ɑː t i / GUUJ-ə-RAH-tee; [14] Gujarati script: ગુજરાતી, romanized: Gujarātī, pronounced [ɡudʒəˈɾɑːtiː]) is an Indo-Aryan language native to the Indian state of Gujarat and spoken predominantly by the Gujarati people. Gujarati is descended from Old Gujarati (c. 1100–1500 CE).
He had started a series of studies for students of literature. It included edited books of criticism on different forms of Gujarati literature. Tunki Varta ane Gujarati Tunki Varta (on short stories, 1977), Nibandh ane Gujarati Nibandh (on essays, 1976), Ekanki ane Gujarati Ekanki (on one-act plays, 1980) were published under this series.
It undertakes to sell and distribute books, and offers annual prizes for essays on various useful subjects. A yearly prize of £15 (Rs. 150) is given for the best Gujarati essay on a given subject, the funds coming from an endowment of £250 (Rs. 2500) made in 1864 by a Bombay merchant, Sorabji Jamsedji Jijibai.
From 1933 to 1937, he taught Gujarati language at MTB College, Surat. On Munshi's request, he returned to Bombay in 1937 and worked as a translator in Oriental office of Bombay Government until his retirement in 1956. He later taught Gujarati in various colleges of Bombay and later served as a principal in college at Mandvi, Kutch.
The name of his most noted book is Narmada-ki-pari-krama written in Hindi language and Saundaryani Nadi Narmada (travelogue) & Parikramā Narmadā maiyānī in Gujarati language [10] [11] for which he has earned several awards. [8] Further, he has also written folk tales & essays in Gujarati, like the book named Thodun sonun, thodun rupun. [12]
It is the result of research on Gujarati short stories in the Gujarati language. The book gives an extensive description on setting as an element in a short story, especially in Gujarati short stories. The book won the Best Book Prize for research in 2012 as instituted by Gujarat Sahitya Akademi. [1]
Through his writing he brought the literature of the west to readers of Gujarati. He heralded a new era in Gujarati literature, known as the Narmad Era.
