The 15th Georgia was organized in the spring of 1861 in Athens, Georgia. It contained troops from eight counties in Northeastern Georgia: Hancock, Stephens, Elbert, Lamar, Warren, Wilkes, Taliaferro, and Oglethorpe counties. [2] It was initially attached to General Robert Toombs' Brigade in David Jones' Division of the Army of Northern Virginia.
