Lexington Minuteman, a 1900 monument by Henry Hudson Kitson pays tribute to the Minutemen during the American Revolutionary War. Minutemen were members of the organized New England colonial militia companies trained in weaponry, tactics, and military strategies during the American Revolutionary War.
The house and 3.4 acres of land were purchased and restored by Save Our Heritage, a Concord non-profit that transferred ownership to the National Park Service in 2012. Lexington Battle Green, formerly known as Lexington Common, site of the first action on April 19, 1775, is part of the park's story, but the Town of Lexington owns and maintains it.
The medium was switched to bronze and it was cast from ten Civil War-era cannons appropriated by Congress. The statue depicts a minuteman stepping away from his plow to join the patriot forces at the Battle of Concord, at the start of the American Revolutionary War. The young man has an overcoat thrown over his plow, and has a musket in his hand.
[3] Many of the states continued to maintain their militia after the American Revolution until after the U.S. Civil War. Many of the state National Guards trace their roots to the militia from the American Revolution. The lists below show the known militia units by state for the original colonies plus Vermont. [note 1]
The towns of Concord and Lexington, Massachusetts, are the site of Minute Man National Historical Park, a park governed by the National Park Service. [1] The most highly attended event in the park is the annual reenactment of the first shots of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, [2] performed by the Lexington Minute Men Company and His Majesty's Tenth Regiment of Foot.
The Culpeper Minutemen fought for the colonial side in the first year of the American Revolution and are remembered for their company flag: a white banner depicting a rattlesnake, featuring the phrases "Liberty or Death" and "Don't Tread on Me". At the time, Culpeper was considered frontier territory.
John Parker's experience as a soldier in the French and Indian War (Seven Years' War), at the Siege of Louisbourg and the conquest of Quebec, most likely led to his election as militia captain by the men of the town. He was dying from consumption (tuberculosis), on the morning of April 19, 1775, and had not quite five months left to live. [3]
