Zoram Medical College previously known as Mizoram Institute of Medical Education & Research is the first medical college in Mizoram, India. It was inaugurated on 7 August 2018 by the then CM of Mizoram, Lalthanhawla, at Falkawn, about 16 km (9.9 mi) from Aizawl, Mizoram. [1] [2] ZMC is expected to meet the growing demand of Doctors in Mizoram. [3]

The institution began as the Calcutta School of Medicine in 1886. It was renamed Belgachia Medical College in 1916 and became Carmichael Medical College in 1918. The sessions commence from first January and first July. The admission to the courses is made on merit on all-India basis by holding an entrance examination by the institute, after issuing a countrywide admission notice. Each year, more than 20,000 medical graduates across the country compete for the positions.
The foundation stone of AIIMS Delhi was laid in 1952. [2] The first AIIMS was established in 1956 under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956. [3] Originally proposed to be established in Calcutta, it was established in New Delhi following the refusal of Chief Minister of West Bengal Bidhan Chandra Roy. [4]
The college was affiliated to the University of Mysore and the trainees were now granted medical degrees. Mysore Medical College was the first medical college in the state of Mysore and only the seventh in India at this time. At the request and insistence of Sri Krishnadevaraja Wodiyar the college was shifted from Bangalore to Mysore in 1930.
