In 1973, Cox Broadcasting, headquartered in Atlanta, purchased KFI for $15 million, which at the time was the highest amount paid for a radio station. James Wesley, Cox's general manager at WIOD in Miami , and that station's operations manager, Elliott "Biggie" Nevins, were dispatched to Los Angeles to manage KFI.
