The Canadian ten-dollar note is one of the most common banknotes of the Canadian dollar.. The current $10 note is purple, and the obverse features a portrait of Viola Desmond, a Black Nova Scotian businesswoman who challenged racial segregation at a film theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, in 1946.
The note's design and change of material to a polymer (plastic) paper, for longevity and counterfeit prevention, was first announced on 10 March 2011. On 20 June 2011, Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty unveiled the new $100 notes. [2] The previous 100-dollar note is dominantly brown in colour.
Canada is the top place of birth of the Black population. In 2016, more than four in 10 Black people were born in Canada. Long-established Black immigrants were mostly from the Caribbean, but recent immigrants were predominantly from Africa. More than half (56.7%) of the Black immigrants who landed before 1981 were born in Jamaica and Haiti.
The most recent banknote series that included the $1 note was the Scenes of Canada, with the $1 note released in 1974, coloured green and black. The face featured a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II ; the back featured an image of Parliament Hill from across the Ottawa River , with log driving activities taking place on the water.
