After the outbreak of World War II, the Norfolk and Western Railway's (N&W) mechanical engineering team developed a new locomotive—the streamlined class J 4-8-4 Northern—to handle rising mainline passenger traffic over the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially on steep grades in Virginia and West Virginia.
In December 2018, VIA Rail Canada ordered 32, 5-car trainsets (for a total of 160 cars) from Siemens for use on the Québec City–Windsor Corridor, at a cost of $989 million. [ 21 ] [ 22 ] Trainsets will be powered by diesel-electric Charger locomotives, with passenger car trainsets from the Siemens Venture family. [ 23 ]

The Great Western Railway Roundhouse in London, Ontario, Canada. John Street Roundhouse, Toronto, Ontario, which is now the Steam Whistle Brewing, was formerly a Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive repair facility; CNR Spadina Roundhouse was also in Toronto until it was demolished in 1986.
Production mainly consisted of passenger cars, freight cars and locomotives. Built in 1904 and named for founder, Richard B. Angus, the Angus Shops were decommissioned in 1992. The underlying lands were subsequently redeveloped for commercial, industrial and housing usage. The 1,240-acre (500 ha) site had 66 buildings.
