Gala Dalí (born Elena Ivanovna Diakonova, Елена Ивановна Дьяконова; 7 September [O.S. 26 August] 1894 – 10 June 1982), usually known simply as Gala, was the wife of poet Paul Éluard and later of artist Salvador Dalí, who were both prominent in surrealism. She also inspired many other writers and artists.
Measuring 65.0 x 54.0 cm, the painting depicts the bust of Gala composed of a matrix of spheres seemingly suspended in space. It represents a synthesis of Renaissance art and atomic theory and illustrates the ultimate discontinuity of matter, [1] the spheres themselves representing atomic particles. [2]
Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening is a surrealist painting by Salvador Dalí, from 1944. A shorter alternate title for the painting is Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee. The woman in the painting, dreaming, is believed to represent his wife, Gala, a regular presence in his work.
The painting's title is a portmanteau of the name of Dalí's wife, Gala Dalí, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). It is a tribute to Francis Crick and James D. Watson, who are credited with determining the double helical structure of DNA in 1953. The painting is in the collection of the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. [1]
On close observation of the original painting, five different images of Dalí's wife Gala appear in Christ's right knee, and five different images of Dalí himself appear in the left knee; the most prominent two being Gala's back/neck/back of head with right arm extended upward, and Dalí's own face complete with his trademark upswept mustache.

Dalí Seen from the Back Painting Gala from the Back Eternalised by Six Virtual Corneas Provisionally Reflected by Six Real Mirrors is an oil painting on canvas executed in 1972–73 by the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí. [1] It is in the permanent collection of Dalí Theatre and Museum in Figueres, Spain. [2]
Salvador Dalí himself wrote: "I started to paint Leda Atómica which exalts Gala, the metaphysical goddess and succeeded to create the ‘suspended space’". Dalí's Catholicism enables also other interpretations of the painting. The painting can be conceived as Dalí's way of interpreting the Annunciation.
