The congregation was founded in 1869 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee, later part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Green Bay. The sisters have active apostolates in education, health care, spiritual direction, and other community ministries. As of 2021, there are 188 sisters in the community.
Jesus People USA (JPUSA) pronounced: ǰ-pu-sa is a Christian intentional community [1] in Uptown, on the North Side of Chicago, Illinois. JPUSA emerged from Jesus People Milwaukee in 1972, and maintains one of the largest continuing communities (100–450 members) produced by the Jesus movement . [ 2 ]
The Gesu name was chosen in 1893 to honor the Church of the Gesu in Rome, where St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, is buried. The cornerstone was laid on May 23, 1893, [ 4 ] [ 5 ] with over 20,000 in attendance.

While in Milwaukee, Bonduel celebrated the first mass in that city. [5] Later in 1837, the Diocese of Detroit sent Reverend Patrick Kelly to Milwaukee to serve as its first resident priest. Kelly celebrated mass in the Milwaukee courthouse until 1839, when he opened St. Peter's, the first Catholic church in the city. [5]
