Benzylpenicillin, also known as penicillin G (PenG [4]) or BENPEN, [5] is an antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections. [6] This includes pneumonia, strep throat, syphilis, necrotizing enterocolitis, diphtheria, gas gangrene, leptospirosis, cellulitis, and tetanus. Many of the syphilis treatment therapies only lead to bacteriostatic results, unless larger concentrations of penicillin are used for bactericidal effects. [ 65 ] [ 66 ] Penicillin overall is the most recommended antibiotic by the Centers for Disease Control, as it shows the best results with prolonged use.
When treating children, Penicillin G procaine can be administered intramuscularly, or penicillin G can be given intravenously for 7 to 10 days. In uncomplicated cases, the patient may switch to oral penicillin after completing a 5-day course of intravenous penicillin G to complete the full 10-day course of antibiotics.
