The Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves owns and manages the preserve and was dedicated June 24, 1979. [2] The reserve is an undeveloped riverine island and is known for its extensive variety of waterbirds. [2] Even though the preserve has a variety of birds, not many people visit the island as the only access is by boat.
The Kentucky was a 19th-century sidewheel steamboat of the Ohio River, Mississippi River, and Red River of the South in the United States. Kentucky was involved in not one, not two, but three serious accidents over her lifespan (1856–1865), which resulted in the deaths of one, 20+, and 50+ people, respectively.
In 2008, the festival was rebranded from the Alcan Dragon Boat Festival to the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival. In 2012, the Society received 8 BuK dragon boats as a donation from Concord Pacific's Terry Hui in honour of Milton Wong, expanding the fleet to 18 BuK dragon boats, and allowing the festival to be raced entirely in BuK boats.
Saline Island, also known as Johnson Island, in the Ohio River near Saline Landing, Illinois, has historical significance in 1862 and 1864 during the American Civil War when it was used for incursion into Illinois. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. [1]
The festival will take place on Saturday, August 20, 2022. Team registration began on May 1.
