The QWERTY layout has more than 3,000 words that are typed on the left hand alone and about 300 words that are typed on the right hand alone (the aforementioned word "minimum" is a right-hand-only word). In contrast, with the Dvorak layout, only a few words are typed using only the left hand and even fewer use the right hand alone.
This allows user instructions to apply to mice or pointing devices that do not use conventional button placement. For example, a left-handed user may reverse the buttons, usually with a software setting. With non-conventional button placement, user directions that say “left mouse button” or “right mouse button” are confusing.
The idea is to only use one hand (preferably the left one) and type the right-hand letters by holding a key which acts as a modifier key.The layout is mirrored, so the use of the muscle memory of the other hand is possible, which greatly reduces the amount of time needed to learn the layout, if the person previously used both hands to type.
