Southwestern Bell Advertising compiled directory listings, while Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages was a sales agent for directory advertising. In 1997, SBC began acquiring other telephone companies, including Pacific Telesis, Ameritech, and SNET. It began including the "SBC" branding with the names of its operating companies.
The yellow pages are telephone directories of businesses, organized by category rather than alphabetically by business name, in which advertising is sold. The directories were originally printed on yellow paper, as opposed to white pages for non-commercial listings.
To get a listing in a remote or non-local area code, directory assistance is available at 1-area code-555-1212. In some cases, a 411 call from a landline will yield local, national, and sometimes international listings. Most telephone companies permit up to two listings per 411 calls.
Pacific Bell Directory's listings compilation division was merged with Southwestern Bell Advertising, L.P., forming SBC Advertising, L.P. It was renamed in 2006 to the current AT&T Advertising, L.P. Pacific Bell Directory still exists today to serve as the directory publisher of the AT&T Real Yellow Pages for Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell customers.
The service will allow any landline or wireless phone user to call 411 and be connected to the wireless listing of a subscriber who has chosen to participate in the service. Carriers who make up the industry LLC creating the service include Alltel (now absorbed by Verizon Wireless), AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint Nextel (now absorbed by T-Mobile).
