  2. Anyone have experience with KT77's in place of EL34's?

    www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/anyone-have-experience-with-kt77s...

I used the KT88 in both the big iron THD Bivalve and small iron Univalve, both with high and low voltage sectors on the outside of the amp. I didn't really notice the KT88 to be more or less soft than my other tubes when in low voltage mode or being used with small iron, but yes, the the lower voltage can be perceived as anemic, especially ...

  3. Question about Big Iron - The Gear Page

    www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/question-about-big-iron.2105870

Hey all. I've been reading some posts and trying to learn more about "big iron" and it's impact on tone and feel. It sure seems like what I'm after. Question, does this idea or affect work with solid state amps? For example the Katana 100, or is this strictly a tube amp thing? I only play at...

  4. Poll: Best choice for low wattage head? (Rock cover band)

    www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/poll-best-choice-for-low-wattage...

Some mention this as an issue with the mini jubilee, others say its fine. The Soldano HR25 uses big iron, so it definitely has the punch for hard rock/metal. I was pretty impressed with the Frieman BE100 I tried, but that is the only friedman I have played. No experience with the other amps in your list.

if the cleans + clean-ish tones are the most important - nothing does what the big iron 100w do - there is magic there, even at lower volumes, that really isn't in any of the 50 watters i've had a lv55 + have access to a handful of 100w models [jcm800, '66 super amp, '70 super lead + '68 super bass] and the lv55 was amazing for dirt tones but ...

  6. Who Uses a 50W Amp to Gig at Small Clubs? - The Gear Page

    www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/who-uses-a-50w-amp-to-gig-at-small...

I explain further: division of labour, ie, let the bass fill the space. And that includes all the frequencies the big iron guitar amp users say they need, 80-120w.That's where the extra watts go.You think you need it but your bass player will drown you just the same.In other words: your 'ballsy' amp will be 'snipped' quite naturally. No worries ...

  7. Blackstar Amped 2 (new version with multfx) - The Gear Page

    www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/blackstar-amped-2-new-version-with...

    > Klick < There is no way you can "dial it in the right way" to get the sound of the big 100W head out of the small floor unit. That being said the Amp1 is a nice tool if you want to save weight. But it's just a small pedal amp, mainly based on solid state technology. No >3 tubes, no big iron.

  9. What's happening inside the amp when changing impedance?

    www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/whats-happening-inside-the-amp...

One simple physical consequence of changing impedance on your guitar amplifier is that more electricity will flow through it if the impedance is lowered (e.g. 16 ohms to 8 ohms). This is why many audio amplifiers aren't rated for low impedance. They're simply not made to handle the extra current.

  10. looking to nail that stoner/doom/sludge guitar tone

    www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/looking-to-nail-that-stoner-doom...

You're right, there are a lot of bands these days using SS amps, so perhaps power tube breakup isn't a requirement, but power/big iron certainly is. Especially when downtuning. Not to say I don't use power tube breakup for MY doomy tones I feel at least a 4x12 is almost mandatory, loaded with some efficient speakers that will handle the lows ...

  11. 68 Custom Vibrolux Reverb - The Gear Page

    www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/68-custom-vibrolux-reverb.1835150

Jun 8, 2017. #3. I have one (68 Custom Vibrolux) and I was able to A'B it next to a 65 DRRI at a local Sam Ash--both great sounding amps. The "vintage/vibrato" channel is supposed to be like the blackface DRRI, but side by side, the DRRI is louder at lower settings than the 68 VR is on the Vintage/vibrato channel.
