Izuku is first seen in My Hero Academia as a 4-year-old boy about to be beaten up by three other classmates, one of them being Katsuki "Kacchan" Bakugo, who has the ability to create explosions. In a world where most of the population is gifted with special powers known as "Quirks", Izuku Midoriya is a young boy who always dreamed of becoming a hero, despite not having a Quirk himself, until one day he is attacked by a villain made of sludge and is rescued by none other than All Might, the best hero in the world and his idol since childhood.
Sir Nighteye asks Izuku to present him with a contract and explains the difference between the Hero Work-Studies and the week-long internships. Izuku wants to participate so he can stand out, but Sir Nighteye refuses to stamp his paper. He claims Izuku brings no benefit to his agency and asks how he plans to be useful.

Uraraka then grabs the megaphone and floats on top of U.A., giving a speech pleading to the civilians to let Izuku rest because Heroes deserved to be saved too. As a result, the civilians start to see how battered and tired Izuku is and by the end of her speech, Izuku breaks down on his knees in tears.
