The Aeronautical Information Service, or AIS (French: Service de l'Information Aéronautique, SIA) is a service established in support of international civil aviation, whose objective is to ensure the flow of information necessary for the safety, regularity, and efficiency of international air navigation.
The main threat to the integrity of any AIS system are non-compliant AIS transmissions, hence careful specifications of all transmitting AIS devices. However, AIS transceivers all transmit on multiple channels as required by the AIS standards. Consequently, single-channel or multiplexed receivers will not receive all AIS messages.
The different services and frameworks of the interface specifications have been designed to be modular and, to a certain degree, independent of one another. This allows a system providing only AIS and no HPI to exist and vice versa. The only required architectural dependency is the dependence on the Cluster Membership Service (CLM).
