It is also an important commercial centre. Vilafranca is also the birthplace of the Penedesenca fowl, famous for their chocolate-coloured eggs.

Avinyonet del Penedès (Catalan pronunciation: [əβiɲuˈnɛd dəl pənəˈðɛs]) is a municipality in the comarca of the Alt Penedès in Catalonia, Spain. It is situated in the south-east of the comarca, and is served by the N-340 road between Barcelona and Tarragona. The ajuntament (town hall) is in Les Cabòries.

Vilanova del Camí (Catalan pronunciation: [ˌbiləˈnɔβə ðəl kəˈmi]) is a municipality in the comarca of the Anoia in Catalonia, Spain.The name literally means "New Town of the Route", the route being the road from Igualada to Vilafranca del Penedès (now the C-244).
Penedès is a wine-producing region having a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) (Denominació d'Origen Protegida in Catalan). Penedès DOP includes all Penedès region and municipalities of four other comarques: Anoia, Alt Camp, Baix Llobregat and Tarragonès.
The Penedès DOP is centred in the regional capital, Vilafranca del Penedès, with nearby Sant Sadurní d'Anoia the acknowledged centre of Cava production. Besides these two, the principal towns are Vilanova i la Geltrú, Sitges and el Vendrell. The Penedès DOP includes 66 municipalities.
