The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE) is a state agency of Texas. It has its headquarters in Suite 8.600 at 1801 Congress Avenue in the George H. W. Bush State Office Building in Downtown Austin, Texas. [1] The board regulates dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and dental labs in the state.

The Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (formerly the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners) is one of three examination agencies for dentists in the United States. [1] These were organized to better standardize clinical exams for licensure. Historically each state had its own independent licensing exam.
California, Colorado, Connecticut, and Minnesota are states which allow candidates to complete a 1-year General Practice Residency (GPR), or an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) in lieu of a regional board exam. As of 2007, New York no longer accepted the NERB, and has since required all graduates to complete a GPR or AEGD.
