The Independence State Hospital was built in 1873 as the second asylum in the state of Iowa.It is located in Independence, Iowa.The original plan for patients was to relieve crowding from the hospital at Mount Pleasant and to hold alcoholics, geriatrics, drug addicts, mentally ill, and the criminally insane.
The hospital is located in Springfield, in the U.S. state of Oregon. Established in 2008, it is the only remaining Sacred Heart facility in the Eugene-Springfield area owned by PeaceHealth. The RiverBend facility is home to a 24-hour Level II trauma center including full medical/surgical care.
The other facility, Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, is in Springfield and is still open. Sacred Heart in Eugene was once the largest hospital in the area until a newer facility at RiverBend opened in August 2008. Most general services moved to this larger hospital.
