Currently, Kegelman AFAF is a sub-base of Vance Air Force Base under the control of the 71st Flying Training Wing (71 FTW). The airfield was previously administered by Will Rogers Field, Clovis Army Air Field, Woodward Army Air Field, and Liberal Army Airfield prior to the U.S. Air Force becoming an independent service in 1947. [4]
All students practice basic patterns and landings at Kegelman Air Force Auxiliary Field located near Cherokee, Oklahoma. Vance is considered the second busiest RAPCON facility in the United States, behind Nellis AFB. Nellis AFB is open 24 hours, but Vance AFB has more traffic per hour.
Started out as Ardmore Army Air Field during World War II. Trained B-17 Flying Fortress and B-26 Marauder crews and CG-4 glider pilots. The army vacated in 1945 but the air force came back in 1953. From 1953 to 1959 cargo planes were stationed here. C-119 Flying Boxcar, YC-122 Avitruc, C-123 Provider and C-130 Hercules.

After traveling east for two miles (3.2 km), SH-38 is forced to turn back to the north by Kegelman Air Force Auxiliary Field, a secondary airfield of Vance Air Force Base. [3] As the highway continues north, it forms the boundary between Kegelman AFAF to the east and the Great Salt Plains State Park to the west. [2]
