Old Man Jenkins (voiced by various actors from seasons 1—10 and by John Gegenhuber since season 11) is an elderly townsperson who lives at the Shady Shoals retirement home and is a common patron of the Krusty Krab. His appearance and job changed often throughout the first ten seasons.
Plankton and Krabs begin arguing about the story until Karen arrives and tells the real story: The restaurant initially has no customers, with only Old Man Jenkins trying the burger. After eating it, he collapses, having been poisoned by the patty. Krabs and Plankton accuse each other of tainting the patty.
For the voice of SpongeBob, the main character, Hillenburg approached Kenny, who previously worked with him on Rocko's Modern Life. "Séance Shméance": Old Man Jenkins orders a sandwich that the Krusty Krab does not sell. SpongeBob finds that this sandwich comes from a restaurant demolished years ago, and conducts a séance to speak to the restaurant's owner and learn the recipe.
"FarmerBob": Mr. Krabs is in debt to Old Man Jenkins, so he makes SpongeBob and Patrick work on Jenkins' farm to pay off the debt. While operating the tractor for a chore, they accidentally create crop circles, attracting a group of friendly aliens.
SpongeBob grows tired of helping people with their trivial needs and attempts to fly with the jellyfish, but the townspeople chase after him. The chase ends when Old Man Jenkins (who's had a string of bad luck because of SpongeBob's flying adventures during the whole episode) launches from a cannon and hits SpongeBob, tearing up his pants.
