King's Highway 401, commonly referred to as Highway 401 and also known by its official name as the Macdonald–Cartier Freeway or colloquially referred to as the four-oh-one, [3] is a controlled-access 400-series highway in the Canadian province of Ontario.

Highway 401 is the longest freeway at 828.0 kilometres (514.5 mi), in addition to being the widest and busiest road in Canada. Highway 420 is the shortest of the routes at 3.3 kilometres (2.1 mi). [1] There are four examples of 400 series standard highways in Ontario that are not signed as such.
Of note are the Ontario Tall Wall median barrier and the Parclo A-4 interchange design, the latter which became standard in the design for the widening of Highway 401 through Toronto in 1962. The Institute of Traffic Engineers subsequently recommended this design to replace the cloverleaf interchange throughout North America.

The following is a list of freeways in Ontario as defined by the Official Road Map of Ontario published by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO). [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The MTO defines a freeway as a divided highway with at least two lanes in each direction.
The Hanlon Expressway or Hanlon Parkway is a limited controlled-access expressway connecting Highway 401 with the city of Guelph in the Canadian province of Ontario.The 17 km (11 mi) route travels in a generally north–south direction on the city's west side.
Construction of Ontario Highways 400 and 401 began in the early 1950s, with the last section of 401 completed in 1968. Both roads were intended as bypasses, going around populated areas instead of through them (the highways 11/27 and 2 which they replaced were Main Street in nearly every served community) and therefore initially had few services.
