The group Pteropoda was established by Cuvier as "ptéropodes" in 1804. [4] François Péron and Charles Alexandre Lesueur thought the group to be larger, and so they also included the opisthobranch taxa (Phyllirhoë and Glaucus), the heteropoda taxa (Carinaria and Firola), and even the Ctenophora ().

The Thecosomata (collective/plural: thecosomes, [1] meaning "case/shell-body"), [2] or sea butterflies, are a taxonomic suborder of small, pelagic, free-swimming sea snails known as holoplanktonic opisthobranch gastropod mollusks, in the order Pteropoda (also included within the informal group Opisthobranchia).
The species was first recorded in Hawaii off the Kona Coast of the Big Island.It is a pelagic species that is rarely seen at night in off-shore waters. Currently, it is found in Big island, and Maui (Hawaii), as well as the south atlantic, near tropical areas of Brazil and Argentina, [3] as well as the Indo Pacific. [4]
