Marion Hicks and J.C. Grayson built El Cortez, downtown Las Vegas' first major resort, for $245,000. [4] El Cortez opened on November 7, 1941. The all-suite hotel opened in December 2001, with 716 rooms. The casino, which includes 24,665 sq ft (2,291.5 m 2) of gaming space, opened on January 17, 2003.
