The South West Main Line [1] (SWML) is a 143-mile (230 km) major railway line between Waterloo station in central London and Weymouth on the south coast of England. A predominantly passenger line, it serves many commuter areas including south western suburbs of London and the conurbations based on Southampton and Bournemouth.

The Kingston loop line is a railway line built by the London and South Western Railway (L&SWR) in South West London. It was built in two stages, the first of which was opened in 1863 and ran from Twickenham to Kingston. Travel from Kingston to London by that route was a rather circuitous trip.

[14] On Monday 1 October 1900 1 person was killed and 2 injured when a signalman forgot that a passenger train was occupying the up platform at Virginia Water and allowed a horse box train into the station resulting in a collision.
