At Ichigo's school, Ichigo meets a team of Soul Reapers consisting of Renji Abarai, Tōshirō Hitsugaya, Rangiku Matsumoto, Ikkaku Madarame, Yumichika Ayasegawa and Rukia Kuchiki dispatched to help Ichigo against the arrancar threats.
Yumichika and Ikkaku save him, so Mayuri instructs them to find his body containers, holding Rangiku, Hitsugaya, Kensei and Rose, all of whom he succeeded to de-zombify at the cost of some of their life expectancy. Rangiku and Hitsugaya are released and Mayuri and Kenpachi are placed in their containers instead.
The zombified Hitsugaya easily defeats Ikkaku, Yumichika and Charlotte, facing Mayuri alongside the zombified versions of Rangiku, Kensei, and Rose. But Mayuri manages to call in his resurrected Arrancar, and face the zombified trio with ease.
Yumichika then tells Rangiku, who brings tea to Ōmaeda to follow as well. In the end, even Suì-Fēng plays along with the story by doing chores for Ōmaeda after being persuaded by Yoruichi. However, at the end of the day, the three boys overhear Ikkaku and Yumichika discussing the fact that Ōmaeda would never become a captain.
Renji reports to Yamamoto and informs him that the captains involved in the brawl with Inaba have not been heard from. Yamamoto then states that only Ichigo, Rukia, Renji, Ikkaku and Yumichika are prepared for battle. Yamamoto then speculates several hollows may have gathered due to the spiritual disturbance.

Ikkaku's brutal training causes most of the team to quit, except for a boy named Shinji, who is dedicated to become stronger. To recruit more team members, Ikkaku asks his fellow Soul Reapers Hitsugaya and Renji Abarai to participate in the kendo tournament. The Soul Reapers easily defeat their opponents.
