The Longyou Caves (Chinese: 龙游石窟), also called the Xiaonanhai Stone Chambers (Chinese: 小南海石室), are a group of 24 artificial sandstone caverns located at Fenghuang Hill, near the village of Shiyan Beicun on the Qu River in Longyou County, Quzhou prefecture, Zhejiang province, China. [1]
The cave has three very large images – the central image is of Sakyamuni Buddha with Bodhisattvas on either side. The features of the images are indicative of the Northern Wei style, typically of slim and emaciated figures. There are about 800 inscriptions on the walls and in the niches inside the cave, the most in any cave in China. [3]
The cave contains numerous waterfalls, and at least three underground rivers, some of which contain cave shrimp, and fish weighing several pounds. [12] Tadpoles, frogs, salamanders, insects, spiders, bats, leeches, blind fish, and mushrooms have also been found. Since 1987, at least 20 expeditions from France and Japan have explored the cave. [13]
