T5 retrofit conversion can maintain existing lighting levels with the higher efficiency of the T5 lamp. However, with kits that operates the lamp on the existing magnetic ballast, the efficiency drops and the lamp life is considerably shortened, as T5 lamps aren't designed to be operated on mains frequency but only on high frequency.
The top is a rapid start series autoregulator ballast for two 30–40 W lamps. The middle is a preheat reactor ballast for a single 30–40 W lamp while the bottom ballast is a simple inductor used with a 15 W preheat lamp. An American magnetic ballast for signs in an aluminum sign frame.
The LED tube standard EN 62776 is based on the international standard IEC 62776 [2] (Double-capped LED lamps designed to retrofit linear fluorescent lamps – Safety Specifications), which applies to LED tubes compatible with a magnetic as well as an electronic ballast.
Ballast loss can be about 25% of the lamp power with magnetic ballasts, and around 10% with electronic ballasts. Fluorescent lamp efficacy is dependent on lamp temperature at the coldest part of the lamp. In T8 lamps this is in the center of the tube. In T5 lamps this is at the end of the tube with the text stamped on it. The ideal temperature ...
