Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ was founded by Elder William Roberts in 1916. Its services were held in various Chicago buildings until 1922 when its permanent building was constructed at 4021 S. State Street. [2] The church was initially built as a one-story brick structure. A second story was added in 1927.
That building was completely destroyed on Sunday, October 8, 1871, when the Great Chicago Fire swept the area. That same year, a temporary structure is built, the North Side Tabernacle. [1] A new building which could hold up to 10,000 people was dedicated in 1876 and the church was renamed Chicago Avenue Church in June, 1876. [2]
The two buildings are considered as a unit; together, they are a Chicago Landmark and an Illinois Historic Landmark and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church building is currently occupied by the First Baptist Congregational Church, whose official mailing address is 1613 W. Washington Blvd. in Chicago.

After the tabernacle was replaced by a new stake center in 1948, the tabernacle fell into disuse. In 1984, the church announced the tabernacle's closure due to "public safety reasons". A petition was formed to save the tabernacle building and in 1994, the church decided to retrofit it into a temple. The temple was completed in 1997. [14]
