From its summit the road descends through Millhouse Green, Thurlstone, around Penistone before joining the M1 motorway at Junction 37. From the M1 junction the road passes through Barnsley , Cudworth , Brierley and around Hemsworth (bypassed) to Ackworth Moor Top ending in Pontefract at a junction with the A639 road .
There has been a coach interchange at M1 Junction 14 since April 1989, [5] constructed by Buckinghamshire County Council (as the then highway authority). [3] As of October 2020, the section from junction 13 of the M1 to the south-western flank of Milton Keynes is a dual carriageway.
The A453 becomes trunk road again just north of M1 junction 23A where it joins a spur of the A42 at a roundabout on the parish boundary of Kegworth, which was built when the A42 opened. Later the Donington Park services were added in July 1999. It runs parallel to the motorway to M1 junction 24, to link to the motorway and the A50 road.
