The location was named for Cornelius Davis, who moved there in 1836, and with his sons platted a village in 1857. A post office was established in 1855, and "Davisburg" still serves as the mailing address for a majority of addresses within the township. By the time the fourth Clarkston School was completed in 1930 in Independence Township, the area's population had started to decline.
