The surface area of the bay comprises 34.5 square kilometres (13.3 sq mi) [2] and generally stretches from the confluence of the Clyde River with the bay east of the town of Batemans Bay, near Snapper Island; to its mouth with the Tasman Sea at the Tollgate Islands, located between North Head and Circuit Beach.
The Clyde River rises below Kangaroo Hill in the Budawang Range, part of the Great Dividing Range, within Budawang National Park, south of the locality of Sassafras, and flows generally southwards parallel to the east coast, joined by nine tributaries including the Bimberamala, Yadboro, and Buckenbowra rivers, before turning east and reaching its mouth of the Tasman Sea at Batemans Bay.
Batemans Bay is administered by the Eurobodalla Shire council. The town is situated on the shores of an estuary formed where the Clyde River meets the southern Pacific Ocean. Batemans Bay is located on the Princes Highway about 280 kilometres (170 mi) from Sydney and 760 km (470 mi) from Melbourne.
Batehaven is a locality approximately 4 kilometres (2 mi) from Batemans Bay in south-central New South Wales. At the 2021 census it had a population of 1,911. [3]
