League of Legends (LoL), commonly referred to as League, is a 2009 multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games. Inspired by Defense of the Ancients , a custom map for Warcraft III , Riot's founders sought to develop a stand-alone game in the same genre.
The organisation previously had a League of Legends team competing in the Vietnam Championship Series (VCS), the highest level of competitive League of Legends in the country. The team became VCS champions (a title held only by the GIGABYTE Marines at the time) on 7 April 2018, a feat accomplished during their first appearance in the league.
